KCSE Report: Analysis Computer Studies 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014

30/10/2016

  • Since the new syllabus was revised in 2006, Computer studies examinations was done the 9th time in the year 2014 under the new syllabus
  • The subject has three papers namely: paper 1 [451/1], papers 2 [451/2] and paper 3 [451/3]
  • Paper one is a theory paper, paper two is a practical paper and paper three is a computer project normally developed by the Council but assessed in schools by Computer Teachers

Marks Weight Allocations

Paper 1 always has the lion's share with a total of 100 marks. Paper two and Paper three are moderated then the marks combined to make up 100 marks

Candidates' General Performance

Picture
What we can deduce from the General Performance Table above
From the table above, we can deduce that
  1. The number of computer candidates has been on the increasing trend
  2. Even though the performance of paper 1 improved significantly in 2014, Practical and Project papers performed better than paper 1 over the four year period
  3. The performance of Computer studies nationally was above average; this will boost its popularity against her family of technical subjects
  4. Performance in both the practical paper (451/2) and the project paper (451/3) dropped minimally from 61.12% in 2013 to 60.58% in 2014 representing 0.8835% decline.
  5. Overall performance in the subject improved from a mean of 110.36 in the year 2013 to 113.43 In the year 2014 representing 2.782%.

Topics that teachers need to emphasize on

  1. Computer  systems
  2. Data processing modes
  3. System development
  4. Computer Application Areas and uses
  5. Networking
  6. Data Security
  7. Spreadsheets

Career Choices that directly require computer studies as a cluster subject

There are no career choices that directly acknowledge computer studies as a requirement other than being pooled together with other technical and humanities as a forth choice for most careers, Thus, Computer studies does not have a competitive  edge that could convince students to choose it a career subject. One could think that courses like software engineering, computer science and engineering, IT, ICT require computer studies as a core subject but Alas! Not yet a reality in Kenya

2017 Term dates changes is a blow to school based university programs

25/10/2016

The Ministry of Education has yet sent a second sign in form of a progressive message to teachers that it doesn't support the famous University programme dubbed School Based by announcing the new 2017 term dates as follows:
Picture
School based programs are essential for teachers who want to make academic advancements in Kenyan Universities. This Include: Post graduate and Undergraduate degrees and normally takes 21 days of examinations and learning also called a tri-semester. The program was started by universities to accommodate teachers who wanted to advance but could not be recommended for the normal study programmes by the Ministry due to the technicalities and complications involved.
Traditionally, school holidays had between 3-4 weeks in April and August but the new term dates have limited April and August holidays to 3 weeks making it difficult for varsity students to prepare. But we hope Universities will adjust their programs to fit the ministry's term dates.
The restructuring of term dates was implemented by Education CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i as a strategy to curb KCSE examinations cheating which had rampantly been anticipated from previous years.
In a circular labeled MOE.HQS/S/6/72 and released on 21st Oct 2016, Mr Matiang'i announced the new changes that would take effect from 4th Jan 2016 when all schools are instructed to roll their programs to the new changes.
Its our wish that all stakeholder's expectations are met and also sanity is restored to the education sector for the best of our country and the future of our children.

Chemistry Performance in KCSE for the last five years

18/10/2016

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014

Chemistry is one of the averagely performed subjects offered in KCSE KNEC examinations according to the report that was released in 2015 by Knec. Chemistry subject is tested with two theory papers and one practical paper namely; Papers 1[233/1], Paper 2[233/2] and Paper 3[233/3] and the marks are distributed in the ratio 80:80:40 respectively.

Distribution of Chemistry Marks

  • Paper 1[233/1]
  • Paper 2[233/2]
  • Paper 3[233/3]

80 marks
40 marks
The table below shows the chemistry performance in the last five year:
Picture
From the table above, we can deduce that:
  • Chemistry performance has been on the up in the last five years, an act which KNEC says is attributed to improved standards of setting of examinations and also marking
  • The number of students taking the subject has been on the increase. This means, more students will apply for Chemistry related career courses in the near future
  • By critically looking at the table above, you will realize that Paper 1 and Paper 3 exams are performed better than paper 2. This poses as a challenge to chemistry teachers who should put more emphasis on paper 2 in order to harvest good grades and also drill weaker students on paper 1 and paper 3 to up their grades

Here are career choices that directly require chemistry as a cluster subject

Headteachers are now chief officers as in manning of examinations for KNEC KCSE and KCPE is concerned. They have been provided extreme powers to oversee smooth period during examinations and here are some of the  responsibilities they have been entrusted with;

Headteacher should ensure that:-
  • Identify lecturers of integrity and ability and recommend them to the Sub-County Directors of Education for deployment as Supervisors and Invigilators before the commencement of the examination administration They should also ensure that: -
  • The examination room is clean with no stimulus materials on sight.
  • The examination rooms have adequate security.
  • Staff members of the institution do not interact with the candidates in any way while the examination is in progress.
  • The optimum examination conditions are met in the examinations roomsuch as candidates sit at least 1.22 m apart.
  • Invigilators are assisted to frisk/search candidates as they enter for each examination session.
  • Identification of bonafide candidates is done to avoid impersonation
  • Collect the examination papers from Distribution Centres on daily basis (They can also delegate to Registrar or Examinations Officer but this has to be communicated)
  • Ensure there is a visible wall clock in every examination room.
  • All the candidates are in the class room 30 minutes before the start of the examination.
  • Ensure virtues such as honesty, hard work and moral rectitude are inculcated into their students as part and parcel of their character building in order to resist the tendency to cheat in the examinations.
  • There are adequate facilities for shorthand and typewriting examinations such as:
  1.     TWO (2) stopwatches in working condition.
  2.     Adequate typewriters in working condition for all candidates.
  • Record daily in the institution logbook any occurrences related to the examinations including attendance of supervisors and invigilators and details of the means of transport used.
  • Accurately complete the Principal's confidential report at the end of the examination and submit the same to the Council.
  • Maintain discipline in the examination centres when the examinations are in progress and remain in their duty stations.
  • Download from KNEC website all relevant documents for use before and during the conduct of examinations. The documents are:
  1. Timetables
  2. Instructions for summarizing and submission of coursework, assessment and project marks.
  3. Report and certificate of supervision.
