Benefits of fasting during the month of Ramadhan.
  1. It is a fulfilment of a pillar of Islam.
  2. It is a commandment of Allah to all Muslims (Q2:183).
  3. Muslims gain spirituality (taqua), brings them closer to Allah.
  4. Makes those who are well off know what hunger is and appreciate the problem of poverty.
  5. Prepares Muslims in times of hardship and famine.
  6. Instils sense of loyalty to Allah, that a Muslim who has money and food leaves all that and decides to fast so as to please Allah.
  7. Fasting is beneficial to health e.g. it prevents diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

  9. Discourages evil among Muslims.
  10. It is intended to help Muslims save and do sound budgeting.

Contributions of Muslim Scholars to Science.
  1. The Prophet (p.b.u.h) laid down the foundation to the development of science by encouraging Muslims to learn e.g. he taught Muslims on facts about science e.g. he said “the abdomen is the source of all ailments”.
  2. Muslim scholars excelled in chemistry and laid foundations e.g. Jabir Ibn Hayyan (803 CE) is regarded as the father of chemistry.
  3. Ibn Sina wrote 246 books in different sciences e.g. canons of medicine which was a chief guide for medical colleges in the west from the  12th to 17th century, he discovered TB, meningitis and close to 760 drugs.
  4. In ophthalmology, Hunain Ibn Ishaq, the head of the famous school of translators founded by Khalifa Maamun wrote the first systematic book on ophthalmology.
  5. In the field of medicine Al-Razi wrote over 200 books on medicine. He was a physician and a scientist.
  6. Al-Zahrawi was a famous surgeon who treated patients and taught students from the Muslim world and Europe. His book ‘medical encyclopedia’ contained 30 sections of surgical knowledge and illustrations of 200 surgical instruments; the encyclopaedia was used as a standard textbook on surgery in Europe, he was the first to use silk thread in stitching wounds.
  7. In pharmacy al-Idrisi collected plants and data not reported before him from which a large number of drugs became available to medical practitioners.
  8. Ibn Al-Baitar was one of the greatest scientists. and botanist, he went on many expeditions to Africa and Asia to collect plants, and his book is one of the greatest botanical compilations dealing with medical plants.
  9. A1-Khuwarizmi was the first great Muslim mathematician who invented algebra which was further developed by other Muslim scholars like Umar-al-Hayyam.
  10. Al-Batani is considered one of the greatest astronomer of Islam, he discovered the accurate determination of the solar year as 365 days, 5 hours, 46 minutes and 24 seconds which is very close to modern estimates.
  11. In the field of philosophy al-Kindi is considered as the first philosopher in Islam.
  12. In geography Ibn Majid invented the compass to determine directions which is in use up to now.
  13. In geology Al-Bairuni was the first known writer to identify the formation of sedimentary rocks and the great geological changes that happened in the past.

  1. Violence can lead to the break up of marriage.
  2. Can lead to severe injuries or death of either parties involved.
  3. It can affect children negatively by making them violent.
  4. Domestic violence threatens peace in the society through the reaction of the in-laws.
  5. Leads to loss of love between the couple.
  6. It perpetuates injustice of the society.
  7. It burdens the courts of justice through the numerous cases that are reported on daily basis. Currently it represents the highest percentage of cases in Kenyan courts of law (almost 30%).
  8. It leads to psychological problems e.g. inability to trust, inability to concentrate, sleep disturbances e.t.c.
  9. It creates fear of intimacy in the victim by losing the appetite for sex and any form of intimacy.

  3. It lays down the family institution through uniting the spouses and children if any, in one entity.
  4. It creates and strengthens relationships between people who had no formal relationships before e.g. in-laws.
  5. It enables one to perfect half of his/her religion as said by the Prophet p.b.u.h.
  6. It creates love and affection between the couple.
  7. It provides security to both the spouses and children if any. This includes physical, financial, psychological, medical and educational securities.
  8. It serves as an act of worship since it is a Sunnah of the Prophet p.b.u.h which is highly recommended.
  9. Ss an act of worship, it earns one rewards in the hereafter.
  10. A married person earns the respect of those who surround him/her and the society at large.
  11. One is blessed by Allah after marriage financially and otherwise as per the teachings of Quran (Q 24:32).

Importance of Wasiya to Muslims.
  1. Muslims fulfil a commandment of Allah through the writing of a will hence are rewarded by Allah.
  2. Declaration of Wasiya prevents injustice in ensuring that no undeserving people inherit from the deceased.
  3. Wasiya reduces conflicts among the heirs because the deceased will have clearly stated how he wants his wealth to be distributed to each of his heirs.
  4. Family members are able to refer to the wasiya and know the debtors of the deceased before the distribution of the estate.
  5. Wasiya allows a Muslim to will his property in favour of anyone he likes besides his legal heirs or for any charitable purpose. .
  6. Wasiya enables a Muslim to contribute to charitable purposes e.g. construction of roads, hospitals, mosques thus enabling him to gain rewards (sadaqatul jariya).
  7. Enables poor relatives of the deceased who are excluded from the inheritance to attain a share of his property hence they will be able to cater for themselves.
  8. Muslims are able to improve the social amenities within the community can be of benefit to less fortunate member of the community e.g. a Muslim can will out his property for the construction of hospitals, schools, bore holes e.t.c
  9. In a situation where the law of mirath is not enforced by the Government, a Muslim can write a Wasiya stating how he would like his property to be inherited according to shariah.

  3. Appealing to the authorities to ban gambling and the venues where it takes place, this will discourage many people from engaging in the vice.

Effects of terrorism on the society
  1. Terrorist actions create fear and despondence in the society. Members of the society remain constantly threatened by the fact that terrorist attacks have no specific time or place and hence are downcasted;
  2. Members of the society lose trust in each other and some take this opportunity to strike others because of suspicion rather than concrete reasons;
  3. Different segments of the society may end up hating each other hence creating
  4. permanent hatred in the society which may lead to fights; members of the society are deprived the right of living peacefully and in tranquillity because of the fights which may erupt as a result of the hatred;
  5. Development in the society is hindered as people who are subjected to this hatred due to terrorist actions cannot join hands in building the nation.
  6. As a result of the attacks from the terrorists, innocent people are victimised either by the government or other quarters in the name of fighting terrorism.
  7. Property is destroyed and lives are lost in the case of a terrorist attack. e.g September ll.

c) Give the rationale for the prohibition of intoxicants in Islam. (7 marks)

 Rationale for the prohibition of intoxicants in Islam:
  1. Intoxicants are the mother of all vices and since those who consume intoxicants are prone to vices such as adultery, fomication, theft as a result of addiction e.t.c.
  2. Prayers of a Muslim who consumes alcohol (khamr) will not be accepted by Allah (S.w);
  3. many families are destroyed by intoxicants e.g. absentee and irresponsible parents who spend their time drinking alcohol hence neglecting their parental responsibilities;
  4. drunkards and drunk addicts commit crimes e.g theft so as to sustain their habits;
  5. intoxicants are harmful to the health and well being of a human being e.g. can lead to diseases such as liver cirrhosis, anxiety, brain damage e.t.c.
  6. consumption of alcohol has led to loss of many lives through road accidents; consumption of intoxicants leads to wastage of time and money as much time is wasted in bars and money wasted in buying the intoxicants.
  7. leads to negligence of children by parents, the children become delinquents and a burden of society.
  8. leads to divorce as a result of failure to fulfill conjugal rights and providing basic necessities;
  9. one who uses intoxicants is cursed according to the Prophet (S.A.W)

b) State any five etiquettes of speech according to Islamic teachings. (5 marks)

Etiquettes of speech according to Islamic teachings.
  1. A person should either say what is good and beneficial or remain silent:
  2. A person‘s speech should be based on truth. The prophet (p.b.u.h) said "speak the truth even if it is bitter’;
  3. A person‘s speech should guarantee the safety of others;
  4. Speech should be used for remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and promotion of general good e.g giving of charity and reconciliation;
  5. Speech should not involve slander, lies, back biting or giving false witnesses or testimonies.
  6. Two people should not speak alone isolating a third person when they are together to avoid suspicion or ill feeling;
  7. In speech, Muslims should avoid useless and hurtful jokes and vain talks:
  8. Avoid use of obscene language such as abuses and insults;
  9. Avoid using curses in speech.
  10. Avoid harsh speech or speaking in a loud voice or tone except when forbidding wrong or enforcing laws of Allah.
