​(a) Discuss the contribution of Sheikh Abdallah Al-Farsy to education in East Africa
  1. Sheikh Abdulla was a professional teacher but was later appointed as a senior khadi in Zanzibar
  2. He solicited for funds providing education to Muslim children
  3. He translated Quran into Kiswahili ‘‘Qurani Tukufu’’, which contributed a lot in the education of the people in East Africa.
  4. He used a weekly magazine called Mwongozi of Zanzibar as forum where he answered religious questions from the masses.
  5. He challenged colonial government to raise the standard of Muslim education to the same level as other communities in the country.
  6. He propagated for the reformist teaching against ‘‘Bida’’ as non Islamic practices
  7. His hobby was reading and it earned him a title (Bulul Kutub) which mean bookworm.  This was given by one of his teachers which acted as an inspiration to the young scholars.
  8. He taught many prominent scholars who continued with his practice of educating the masses.
  9. He campaigned against retrogressive practices like not education the girl child
  10. He became an inspector of school hence ensured quality standards of education
  11. He travelled far and wide across East Africa region propagating Islam
  12. He organized for his students to further their education abroad e.g. Sudan, Egypt and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
  13. Many institutions of learning have been established throughout East Africa in his name to provide education e.g. Al-Farsy Gils Mombasa

Contributions of Sheikh Abdallah Swaleh Farsy to the growth of Islam in East Africa.
  1. He was an educationist, worked as a senior Kadhi in Zanzibar (1960-1968) and as chief Kadhi in Kenya (1968-1972).
  2. He authored over 25 books through which Muslims knowledge of Islam was enriched.
  3. He translated the Qur’an into Kiswahili making it for non-Arabic speaking to read the Qur’an.
  4. His spiritual leadership and decrees were accepted by all Muslims who also respected his authority to interpret Islam.
  5. He firmly stood for the interest of the Muslims especially their rights to education.
  6. He advocated for separate Muslim schools and for government aid in running them and for the provision of Muslim teachers paid by the government in public schools.
  7. He advocated for equity in education.  He challenged the government to raise the standards of Muslim education to the level of other community education.
  8. He called for the combination of secular education and Muslim studies in Muslim schools.
  9. He contributed in the establishment of Madrasa system in East Africa.
  10. He called on the government to start the teaching of Islamic Religious Education in schools.
  11. He gave lectures and organized seminars in mosques to educate the Muslim youth.
  12. He stood for the pure Islam/purity of Islam and revival of proper understanding of Islam.
  13. He was committed to reforming the society through education and by getting rid of outdated cultural practices among Muslims.
  14. He travelled widely to propagate Islam in many parts of East Africa.

  1. Early Arabs did not have active missionaries, their main concern was trade.
  2. Fear that Islam is too strict and harsh made Africans not to accept Islam.
  3. Lack of means of transport between the Coast and interior of East Africa.
  4. Hostile communities such as Maasai made the Muslims not to penetrate into the interior.
  5. Fear wild animals and tropical diseases made Muslims not to venture into the interior.
  6. Language barrier- The interior people and the Arabs didn’t understand one another’s language.
  7. There were few kingdoms in the interior which could provide protection to the Arabs.
  8. Christian missionaries were very active in the interior.
  9. Decline of the power of Sultan of Zanzibar in the 19TH Century who was instrumental in encouraging the Arab traders to penetrate the interior.

​Discuss the role of city states on the east coast of Africa in the spread of Islam in the region in the period between 1700 and 1900 A.D.  (12 marks)

  1. By 1700 the city states on the east coast Of Africa had developed into cosmopolitan centres where Swahili/Islamic civilization and culture thrived and this way of life attracted inhabitants from the neighbouring communities and those from the mainland who were involved in the long distance trade with the Arabs and Swahili traders The newcomers easily embraced Islam. 
  2. Muslim inhabitants of the city states intermarried with the local people who converted to Islam upon marriage. 
  3. The Mosques and Madrassas in the city states also attracted the local people to convert to Islam. 
  4. Through trade with the Muslim inhabitants of the city states, local people came into contact with Islam and eventually ended up embracing the religion 
  5. Local people left their homes to seek employment by Muslim inhabitants as domestic workers, in business and in plantations. These workers eventually embraced Islam. 
  6. Local people who left their rural homes, occasionally visited their relatives and took Islam with them to the villages. 
  7. In the 19th century (during the rule Of Sayyid Said bin Sultan) Muslim traders began to travel to the mainland of East African to obtain goods and bring them to the city states. These traders come into contact with the inland tribes to whom they propagated Islam. 
  8. Some of those traders who went to the mainland stayed in the trading centres where they traded with the local people resulting in the establishment of Muslim centres such as Taveta, Ujiji, Tabora, Mumias and Buganda. 
  9. Those Muslim centres in the mainland became important in propagating Islam to the surrounding areas. 
  10. The city states were ruled by Muslim rulers/sultans who extended their authority beyond the city states to the neighbouring local communities who not only came to accept the rule of their Muslim rulers but Islam as well.
