  1. One should forsake sin.
  2. One should feel sorrow/remorse for committing a sin.
  3. One should resolve not to return to sin.
  4. One should make amends for committed sin.
  5. One should repent at the appropriate time.i.e. Immediately after sin is committed before occurrence of death.
  6. One should accompany repentance with righteous works.

Benefits of Tawba
  1. It is the sign of proper and complete faith.
  2. One earns the love of Allah because Allah loves those who purify themselves.
  3. It protects one honour, blood and wealth because repentance is accepted unless these are returned to their owners.
  4. It eliminates anxiety, distress, and worry.
  5. It brings peace and tranquility in the community as sinners give up sinning.
  6. Love and harmony spreads in the society.
  7. It brightens the heart which has been darkened by sins.
  8. Forgiveness of Allah  showers those who repent.
  9. One is covered with the mercy of Allah.
  10. Rewarded
  11. To guide him to invite others to the straight path of Islam.
  12. To condition him not to fear anyone but God.
  13. To teach him not to hope an atom of benefit from anyone except Allah.
  14. To accustom him not to loss courage in want.
  15. It assures man that all matters follow a defined course, none overtakes its define course.
  16. It stresses the belief that Allah is powerful and whatever he wills happens according to his plans.

  1. One must forsake sin.
  2. One must show sorrow for having committed sin.
  3. One must have firm purpose (intention) never to return to sin.
  4. One must make amends by obtaining forgiveness from offended person.

c. State the conditions of Tawba (Repentance).[8 Marks].

State the conditions of Tawba (Repentance).
  1. One must have the intention to repent.
  2. One must regret the sin he committed.
  3. On must rectify/ stop committing the sin and return to Allah.
  4. The sin committed should not be Shirk because Shirk is not forgivable (and Allah knows better).
  5. The act of Tawba must be done immediately after one has realized he made a mistake.
  6. The sin he committed should not involve violation of other people’s rights, e.g. stealing. If one steals, he should return what he stole to the owner then ask for pardon from him before he repents to Allah.
  7. One should repent before the signs of Qiyama are manifested.
  8. Tawba should not be asked in times of death (Saqratul Maut).
  9. The one repenting must be a sane, mature person.
  10. Tawba should only be asked from Allah (S.W.T).

(a) Discuss four conditions for Tawba. (8 marks)

Conditions for Tawba.
  1. Giving up the sin immediately for the sake of Allah and not for any other reason i.e. one should not stop doing wrong for fear of punishment from other people, or being afraid of what people will say.
  2. Feeling sorry and regretting for the sin committed, one should show remorse for the sin committed. One should not be happy/pleased when remembering past sins or wish to go back to it.
  3. Tthe sin should not be repeated again i.e. one should resolve not to go back to the sin again, one should have the intention and determination of never repeating the sin. .
  4. Compensation and seeking forgiveness from the people who have been wronged. e.g. compensating the family of the person who has been killed and seeking their forgiveness Q4:92.
  5. Keep away from places of sin, if being there will make one fall into sin again.
  6. Keeping away from people who induced the committing of the sin if associating with them will lead to repetition of the sin.
  7. Destroying haram things/items such as idols, intoxicants, indecent movies by breaking or burning them (which led them to commit sin.)
  8. Repentance should not be at the time of death i.e. a Muslim should not wait until he/she is on the death bed to repent, repentance should be a daily affair.
  9. Repentance should not be done after one of the signs of the Day of Judgement becomes manifested because the Prophet (p.b.u.h) said that repentance should be done before the sun appears from the west.

Significance of Tawba
  1. Sincere tawba erases past sins; regardless of the magnitude of the sins
  2. It improves a Muslim relationship with Allah and fellow human beings
  3. It enhances reconciliation among conflicting parties
  4. Those who constantly repent are loved by Allah (Q.2:222)
  5. It gives hope to the believer that the door of repentance is open till the approach of death
  6. Tawba deters people from committing sins, given that one of the conditions for a sincere tawba is making a firm resolve of avoiding the sin in future
  7. Tawba seeking individuals show a sense of humility and humbleness in accepting their mistakes
  8. It shows the authority, and greatness of Allah, as he is the only one who accepts tawba
  9. Tawba creates a sense of fear of Allah (Taqwa) by acknowledging presence of Allah hence repentance.
