Explain how you would make a stand alone PC to support virtual reality
What is a boom?A boom is an alternative to the often-uncomfortable head gear. The screen, optical and sound systems borare housed in a box which the user looks into to see the virtual world.
State some of the application areas of virtual reality.
Describe a virtual reality session. The user puts on a head gear or looks through a boom to see the virtual world.
Sound is relayed via an earpiece to the user. Gloves which are worn on the hands enable the user to touch objects in the virtual world while a body suit detects user movements and adjust his/her position in the virtual world. Define the following term 'virtual reality'.Virtual reality is the simulation or generation of a virtual world which to the user, emulates the real world in every aspect.
State seven advantages of computerised transaction processing systems.
Define a transaction processing system.A transaction processing system is an information system that captures, stores, updates and retrieves the daily commercial activities of an organisation.
Explain the importance of electronic commerce to modern organisations.Electronic commerce enables organisations to reach the world wide market through the internet hence increases sales and profitability.
Define e-commerce.E-commerce is the use of computers and other ICT devices to transact business electronically between two or more parties without them coming face to face.
Define an expert system. An expert system is a computer software that simulates the decision making process and behaviour of a human being who has expert knowledge in a certain discipline. It also has a set of rules that help it to make conclusions when some parameters are entered.
State three examples of the use of expert systems.
Define the term 'management information system'. A management information system is a collection of computers, data, information, software, users and presentations that support management to make informed decisions in an organisation.
Describe the use of computers to enforce security in high crime risk areas.Surveillance cameras are used to observe the behaviour of suspected criminals. They relay the information to centralised security centres where officers on duty track the activities of such people on the street using computers. This helps the security agents arrest the suspects or prevent crime in time.
On visiting a media house, Zawadi noticed that access through doors was restricted to visitors and employees with a special card. The door only opened after swiping the card on a device mounted on the wall adjacent to the door or standing in front of the door. Explain this phenomena. The opening and closing of doors (access control) in the building is computerised. In such a case, swipe cards or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards are used. The swipe card is a special magnetic card that has a special access code stored in a database. A radio frequency identification (RFID) card may not need swiping in a slot because it can be read from a distance. It also sends a unique access code to the central computer which then allows the door to unlock.
List some unique biometric features that security and law enforcement agencies can rely on to uniquely identify people using biometric systems.
Highlight six uses of ICT in an automated office.
Explain how the movement of valuable assets in transit at sea or land can be constantly tracked.30/11/2022 Explain how the movement of valuable assets in transit at sea or land can be constantly tracked. The assets can be fitted with specialised geographical positioning systems (GPS) which keep on sending the location (longitude, latitude) of the assets to satellites.
The information can then be plotted on geographical information system (GIS) digital maps to know the exact location of assets at any time. State various uses of computers at home.
Explain how ICT is used to control air traffic. The control tower in airports has computers that show all the aeroplanes entering a country's airspace. The air traffic controllers direct the paths of landing and taking off aeroplanes in the airport to avoid collision. Define the term 'online airline reservation system' and state its advantages. This is a special application software, usually web based, that enables travellers to book and pay for seats on planes in real time from the comfort of their homes or office. Their advantages include:
Cities and major towns experience traffic jams during rush hours. Explain how ICT can be utilised to decongest the traffic on such roads. Each vehicle can be fitted with a navigation unit and GIS/GPS/ mapping technology used to track which roads have heavy traffic and the ones that are free. This would help the drivers to select less busy routes hence save time and fuel.
. The traffic lights can be monitored using a computerised system that regulates traffic based on the intensity of traffic on each road in a junction or roundabout. List five application areas of ICT in transportation.
Kwamboka has just completed Form Four. In school, she discovered that she had a talent in singing and became an active choir member. In a move to venture into music, she bought a new PC a week ago to use it as her recording production tool.(a) Identify what Kwamboka requires to make the PC a multimedia.Multimedia applications require a high speed computer with sufficient memory, CD/DVD drive, sound card, speakers, a microphone, a Musical Instruments Digital Interface (MIDI) port, USB or firewire port, high resolution VGA and multimedia support software such as media player, MP3 and DVD player. (b) Outline the steps you would follow to configure the PC to become a multimedia system.
