Differentiate between discrete and analog data

  • Discrete data is a type of data that is non-continuous in nature such as data in binary form. Discrete data is usually represented using a square waveform.
  • Analog data, on the other hand, is data that is continuous in nature such as speed, temperature, volume and weight. Analog data signals are usually represented using a continuous sinusoidal waveform.

Advantages and Disadvantages of computers

20/12/2020

ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTERS

Computers have many advantages over other types of office and business equipment that are used for data processing functions.  Some of the advantages are:

1) Computers process data faster:

The processing speed of a computer when measured against other devices like typewriters & calculators is far much higher.

2) Computers are more accurate & reliable:

Computers produce more accurate results as long as the correct instructions & data are entered.  They also have the ability to handle numbers with many decimal places.

3) Computers are more efficient:

A computer requires less effort to process data as compared to human beings or other machines.

4) Computers can quickly and effectively store & retrieve large amounts of data.

computers have the capacity to hold, retrieve and process large volumes of data when compared to other devices and humans. their memory is also expandable and faster to retrieve.

5) They are very economical when saving information, for it can conserve a lot of space.

computers makes it cheaper to save information per area required to save same information as compared to manual systems such as file cabinets. A small chip can save lots and lots of information thus saving on the cost to acquire more space.

Give a chronological trend of the development of modern electronic computers from the first generation to the fifth generation. In each case, highlight characteristics of each generation.
  1. First generation computers were very large in size and used thousands of electronic gadgets called vacuum tubes or thermionic valves. They emitted a lot of heat and were difficult to program, use and maintain.
  2. Second generation computers were smaller in size and used electronic devices called transistors. They produced less heat and were also difficult to program, use and maintain.
  3. Third generation computers were made of integrated circuits (ICs). They emitted less heat, were smaller in size and easier to program, use and maintain compared to their predecessors.
  4. Fourth generation computers were made of large scale integrated (LSI) and very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuits. They were characterised by very low emission of heat, were small in size, easy to use and maintain.
  5. Fifth generation computers are today’s computers that have very high processing power and speeds and are designed to solve complex problems. They are characterized by artificial intelligence, connectivity to the internet, superior hardware and software products and are very small in size.

Charles Babbage is regarded as the father of modern computing, yet he never fully implemented his idea. Explain his contribution.
Charles Babbage designed a machine that could calculate a long series of numbers and print the outcome. He later improved the design by incorporating the idea of programming using punched cards (form of programmed instructions) but did not construct it. This idea was later used in developing the first programmable computer.
