The Proclamation of John the Baptist
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

7 John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” 11 In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18 So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. 19 But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added to them all by shutting up John in prison.

(i) The raising of Jairus’ daughter.

Jesus was requested by Jairus who was a leader of a synagogue, to go and heal his only daughter who was very sick (she was 12 years old).
Jesus accepted Jairus’ humble request but word came that the girl was dead and therefore no need to bother Jesus.
Jesus asked Jairus to have faith and told mourners not to wail because the girl was just asleep.
Jesus together with Peter, John and James and the parents of the dead girl, and entered the house.
Jesus held the girls hand and commanded her to rise up to which she responded.
Jesus requested that she be given something to eat.
The miracle was to remain a secret.

Lessons learnt about Jesus from the miracle

Jesus mission was to uplift the lowly like women.
Jesus is the Lord of life. He brings back to life those who have died. He is the Lord of resurrection and life.
He has mercy/compassion to those suffering e.g. raising back to life.
His mission as the Messiah was yet to be revealed to the public.
He welcomes those with faith and responds to their needs.
He came to discourage those Jewish traditions that could be a barrier to eternal life like touching a corpse.

Christians should humble themselves before Jesus if they are to be rewarded.
Christians should assist those who are suffering.
They should turn to God in prayer during times of hardships. They should be patient to witness the mighty works of Jesus.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”

As Jesus was on His way to Jairus’ house, a large crowd followed and pressed against Him.
In the crowd was a woman who suffered from an incurable disease i.e. internal bleeding.
She had bled for twelve years.
She believed that just by touching the cloak of Jesus, she would be healed.
She touched the fringe of Jesus’ garment and immediately the flow of blood ceased.
Jesus asked who had touched Him.
All denied while Peter said there was a great multitude pressing on Him.

When crowds from every town came to him, Jesus gave the parable of the sower.
A sower went to the field to sow seeds.
Some of the seeds fall on the footpath where they were stepped on and eaten by the birds of air.
Some fell on a fertile soil, they grew and bore fruits.
The seed is the word of God.
The sower represents God or his messengers.
The seeds that fell along the path are those people who heard the word then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts that they may not believe and be saved.
The seeds that fell on rocks are those who when they hear the word of God, they receive it with joy but for a while, because when temptations comes they fall away.
The seeds that fell on the thrones are those who hear the word but as they go their way they are carried away by the cares and riches and pleasures of life and their fruits do not mature.
Those that fell on fertile are those who hear the word of God, hold it in their hearts and bring forth fruits.
Some fell on the rocky ground they grew up a little but they dried up due to lack of moisture.

Jesus came to Nazareth where he held been brought up.

He was given the book of prophet Isaiah when he stood up to read.

In both cases, God is the Supreme Being and is good. He is not the author of evil/sin.
Both believe that sin/evil arises from human beings disobedience and greed.
Both agree that sin causes a lot of human suffering.
In both cases, evil may result from failing in a social/spiritual obligation
In both cases, evil and sin results in human beings being separated from God
In both cases, God is the guardian of morality, law and order

Differences

African communities believed that the spirits of the dead are the cause of evil but not so in the bible.
Some African communities believed that evil is an independent or isolated power employed by human beings to cause harm. But it is not so in the Bible.
The Bible believes that sinners will have eternal punishment but Africans believe that punishment is only in the present world.
Biblically people are sinners as descendants of Adam and Eve i.e. sin is passed on from one generation to another. This is not the case in African society.
Although sin has separated humankind from God, Biblically there is a plan of salvation/ redemption, however, there is no such plan in African system.

They appeared early in the history of Israel as a nation e.g. Moses, Elijah, Samuel ,Nathan

1 Samuel 8 New International Version (NIV)

Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.

4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”

Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

The people requested Samuel to choose for them a king because:

Samuel’s sons were bad and evil leaders/failed as judges/perverted justice and therefore the people rejected them.
The Israelites wanted to be like their neighbouring nations/other nations who had earthly kings.
They needed a leader/warrior king who would lead them to war against their enemies e.g. the Philistines.
They wanted a stable hereditary leadership.
They wanted a human leader who could be recognized by other nations.
A leader to organize them.
Wanted a political nation governed by law and order instead of a theocratic government.
Samuel had grown too old and needed a replacement.
They failed to understand that Yahweh was their unseen King. God alone chooses rulers.
