According to the news, Trump said he’s not leaving the White House on January 20th 2021 and he is getting ready to start his 2nd term on that day, what would happen if he tries to do so?
This scene happened sometimes back in the 1800 Elections. On March 4th 1801 the second president of the United States John Adams refused to hand over office to his main rival at the 1800 elections winner - Thomas Jefferson.
The rule of midday January 20 had not been written yet. Despite his stubbornness he refused to relinquish power, and power had to relinquish him instead.
After Thomas Jefferson was sworn in at an event which the incumbent refused to attend, Whitehouse staff started to remove the president’s belongings from the White house (Adams was the first president to reside at the new official residence). All security organs cut all official communication. All presidential staff stopped taking instructions from Adams – THE OFFICE MOVED.
If Trump refuses to leave power, power could leave him
The US constitution makes no mention of how a president should be removed if they lose an election and refuse to hand over power to their opponent. So, it is hard to say if anyone would have the appetite to send the FBI, or navy seals, or whatever law enforcement agency, storming into the West Wing to arrest a recently defeated Donald Trump.
Joshua Sandman, a professor of political science at the University of New Haven suggests that intense congressional and political pressure would force Mr Trump out of office quickly.
“The first line of defence would be the congress, and his party pressuring him out, telling him he must resign or leave,” Mr Sandman says. “If he wants to stay in the White House, he would stay in the White House. But, again, hypothetically you don’t need that. The White House is symbolic. It’s not a seat of power, necessarily.”
It is also rumored that Melania Trump and Trump's chief campaign manager also who served as the senior adviser for data and digital operations for Donald Trump's 2020 presidential campaign Brad Parscale, and a bunch of other Republican leaders are already pressurizing Trump to concede defeat to save the name of their party and democracy. Melania is actually even threatening a divorce once the dust settles.
Ross Baker, an American political expert at Rutgers University in New Jersey, said he imagined a scenario in which the House of Representatives got to decide the electoral college based upon each state’s delegation.
