Introduction (2MKS)
Many people in the community exhibit the virtue of being selfless. In a Doll’s House the following characters are selfless
Mrs. Linde is portrayed as a selfless woman. In order to support her mother and two brothers, she found it necessary to abandon Krogstad, her true but poor lover and marry a rich man. Even after the husband’s death, she continued to make personal sacrifices for the sake of her family like taking on any work like first a small shop and then a small school.
Nora is portrayed as a selfless character. She borrows money from Krogstad and forges her father’s signature to finance a trip to Italy that she claims saved Torvald’s life. Her selfless nature is also seen when she secretly does needlework, crotchet - work, and embroidery to get money to pay back her debt. In addition to this she sacrifices her time doing copying and writing every evening until quite late at night to get some extra money. (PG 21).
Nora’s abandoning her children at the end of the play can also be interpreted as an act of self sacrifice. She chooses to leave them and also Helmer. “She tells her husband “In any case, I set you free from all your obligations. There must be freedom on both sides” She frees herself and her husband.
Nora’s nanny (Anne) is also selfless. She had to abandon her own child to support herself by working as Nora’s and later Nora’s children’s caretaker. As she tells Nora, the nanny considers herself lucky to have found the job since she was” a poor girl who had been led astray,.” She thus sacrifices motherhood for a respectable job.
Conclusion:
From the above examples women characters are truly selfless. Body (12 MKS) Grammar (4 MKS) Related Questions on A Doll’s House
