State the purpose of each of the following memories in a computer system. RAM and Hard disk
Holds data that is urgently need by the processor,
Random-access memory is a form of computer memory that can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data and machine code.
(b) Hard disk
Used to hold large volumes of data that is not urgently required by the processor — also for back up of OS and data.
Give two reasons why optical disks are better storage media compared to floppy diskettes (2mks)
- Enormous storage capacity compared to floppy diskettes
- Faster access time and data transfer rates as compared to floppy diskettes
- Data Recorded on optical disks is not damaged by stray magnetic fields and surface problems like fingerprints, dusts etc.
(a) List five precautions that can be taken to protect data stored in diskettes (5mks)
The diagram below shows a formatted plate surface of a storage disk.
a) one sector
b) One block
Compare the two types of diskettes used in microcomputers in terms of physical size and densities.

Differentiate between primary memory and secondary memory
Primary memory is volatile, i.e. contents held are lost on power loss.
Secondary memory is non-volatile or permanent, i.e. Contents held are not lost on power loss.
Clear differences between primary memory and secondary memory
Primary Memory |
Secondary Memory |
|
1. Capacity |
Low storage capacity |
High storage capacity |
2. Storage mechanism |
Volatile (loses content when power is switched off) |
Non-Volatile (does not lose content when power is switched off) |
3. Speed of storage/access/retrieval of information |
Fast |
Slow |
4. Storage terms |
Store data temporary unless it is a special type of ROM |
Store data permanently |
5. Examples |
RAM and ROM |
Optical Disks such as DVDs, Magnetic Disks such as HardDisk, Solid state disks such as Flash disk and Memory stick |
6. Uses |
Handles data currently needed by the computer |
Stores data that is needed for future reference or data being transfered from one machine to another. |
Types of Storage Devices Used By a Computer Giving an Example of Each
