Wealth

Traditional African understanding of Wealth and Poverty

In African traditional societies wealth was measured in terms of the amount of land, livestock, grains, wives, children possessed by an individual or the community.

Acquiring wealth in T.A.S (Traditional African Society)

Wealth was acquired in various ways:-

As a gift from God
Most Africans believe that wealth is a blessing from God
Inheritance
In cases where the head of the family is dead, the eldest son becomes the custodian of the estate. The clan and community elders give direction on how the wealth is to be shared out
Through payment of bride wealth
such as dowry
Farming
either animal farming or crop farming
Exploitation of natural resources
honey, wood for carving, building materials etc
Trade (Through barter trade)
exchange of goods and services with the aim of making a profit. African communities were involved in barter trade where they exchanged good and services
Raids and warfare
wealth was also acquired by raiding other communities with the aim of stealing goats, sheep and other livestock.
Receiving gifts
from parents, relatives, friends and well wishers
Through hard work, Use of skills and art
in areas such as blacksmith, pottery, wood carving, weaving etc.
Through compensation
settling of disputes resulted to compensation if not of punishment. Compensation was in fines counted with material wealth.
Religious specialists were paid for their services.
services such as medicine-man, sorcery, witch services and other religious and cultural practices attracted wealth through payment of services.

Though baptism one becomes a member of the church of Christ/body of Christ.
Through baptism, one receives the Holy Spirit who acts as a counselor and guides the new convert into spiritual life.
Baptism marks the death of the old self and the beginning of new life in Christ (death and resurrection of Jesus).
Jesus was baptized and Christians should emulate him an identify with him.
One becomes a child of God.
A Christian achieves complete forgiveness of sins because water is symbolic of cleansing/purifying.
Prepares Christians for the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Baptism is an example of the modern religious covenant between the Christian and God.
Baptism is a symbol of forgiveness.

WITH REFERENCE TO LUKE 1:13-17, OUTLINE THE MESSAGE OF ANGEL GABRIEL ABOUT JOHN TO ZECHARIAH

Luke 1:13-17 Revised Standard Version (RSV)

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechari′ah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
14 And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth;
15 for he will be great before the Lord,
and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink,
and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,
even from his mother’s womb.
16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,
17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Eli′jah,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,
and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,
to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

John the Baptist was to be a son.
His name was to be John.
He will be great before God.
He would bring joy /gladness to his parents.
He was to drink no wine /will be a Nazarite.
He was to turn many of the son`s of Israel to God.
He was to go before the lord in the spirit/power of Elijah.
He was to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children.
He was to make ready for the lord a people prepared.
