What is CRE?

Meaning of CRE

CRE or simply C.R.E is an acronym for Christian Religious Education

This a subject/course pursued by Kenyan students in the primary, secondary and tertially/college levels of education. It is therefore taught in schools as covered by the Kenyan Education Curriculum 8-4-4 and the newly launched one C.B.C - Competence Based Curriculum

General Objectives of C.R.E

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

1. Gain insights into the unfolding of God 's self-revelation to humankind through: personal experience, the African Religious Heritage, the Biblical relation as a whole and specifically in Jesus Christ, the Christian community;
2. Use the acquired social, spiritual and moral insights to think critically and make appropriate moral decisions in a rapidly changing society;
3. Appreciate and respect their own, and other people's cultural and Christian beliefs and practices;
4. Acquire the basic principles of Christian living and develop a sense of self respect and respect for others;
5. Promote international consciousness through the understanding of universal brotherhood and sisterhood;
6. Contribute positively to the transformation of self and the society as a whole;
7. Acquire knowledge for further studies in various career fields.

​Definition of Christian Religious Education (CRE) 

​Christian Religious Education is the study of God’s revelation to human beings through scriptures, the persons of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. 

CRE also covers the relationships between Christianity and African Traditional Society, Leisure, Environment, Wealth, Sex and Marriage, Science and Technology, Law and order, Work, Ethics, Leadership and most importantly, Faith.

​The Importance of Learning CRE 

There are many reasons why schools study CRE. Some of the reasons are to:

1. Enable you to develop a personal relationship with God.
2. Help you to acquire basic principles of Christian living.
3. Help you to develop a sense of self-respect and respect for others.
4. Help you to develop positive attitudes and values, which help you to cope with challenges of life.
5. Contribute to the moral and spiritual development of students.
6. Help you to contribute positively to the transformation of an individual and the society as whole.
7. Help you to identify answers to situations of life, including death and Eternal life.
8. Help learners to identify answers to life’s questions.
9. Promotes international consciousness.
10. Help you to understand yourself.
11. Promote cultural integration.
12. Enable you to acquire a better understanding of God.

14. Guide you in choosing a career
15. Help you to appreciate African religious heritage and other religions.
16. Promote living values such as honesty concern for others, kindness, love and unity.
