Mathematics subject is one of the under performed subjects in KCSE Examinations [read here], there are a number of issues that can lead to poor performance in mathematics with bad attitude and lack of determination to blame as chief causes, however, the following twelve theories can improve mathematics grades and pull a miracle unexpectedly. These theories have worked in other areas I know and researched that is why I compiled them in order to share with you.
1. fOCUS ON SYLLABUS COVERAGE
Syllabus coverage should be the principle objective of every teacher or student, this is because examinations setting touches every aspect of mathematics syllabus. But this should not be done at the expense of a student. This area needs a lot of sacrifice since mathematics is wide and entails a lot.
If numbers are anything to be a determinant, make sure the form 1 -form 3 syllabus are cleared by Sept. 30th of every year and the form four syllabus by 15th June of every year. This will open doors for extensive revision and revisiting of hard topics
2. Conduct extensive weekly ambush tests
Weekly ambush tests are a type of evaluation tests that will give you a clear feedback of your learner's progress. If these tests are done frequently and extensively, then results recorded and analysed, they can be used to give a clear picture of your learner's prowess thus as a teacher you can use this to make balanced decisions about your class.
These tests should feature recently cleared topics and subtopics, questions from revision papers like KNEC based and MOCKS evaluations tests. (we have a database that you can easily use to acquire these resources)
3. Conduct proper marking of mathematics examinations
Marking of mathematics examinations should echo that of KCSE examiners. Some teachers mark answers instead of the process. This conduct will kill your learner's morale and motivation. Its advisable for teachers to familiarize themselves with proper marking methodologies and concepts for the benefit of the learner
Proper marking of math exams will expose candidates to the reality of the main examinations and open loopholes for scoring marks.
4. Teacher-Student contact should be adequate
Teachers should avail themselves to candidates to create room for consultations. Its mandatory for teachers to conduct group discussions, create time to give room for students to consult them and always equipped with the burning desire to assist where necessary at all times without fear or favor
5. Conduct/attend mathematics contests and workshops
This will expose you to the outside world and show you the level of others. Create time to attend workshops, seminars, symposiums, contests and any meaningful mathematics gathering that also include e-conferencing
6. Motivate your students
Motivation should be conducted more often to boost learner's morale. This can be done with awarding gifts, positive reinforcement both oral and verbal, academic trips etc.
7. Encourage SENIOR students to mentor JUNIOR students
Encourage senior students to mentor junior students, this is like killing two birds with one stone. While the senior student mentor the junior students, they are revising while the junior students are learning. Let this be like a culture
8. Math club should be more vibrant
Mathematics club should be the most vibrant club in the school with activities rolling throughout the week
9. Team work
Mathematics teachers and students should work as a team. Students should create a conducive environment for learning and teachers dedicate to deliver content
10. embrace student centred approach
Learners should be directly and actively be involved in the learning process. Through Q and A learning methodology and discussion/debate sessions
11. conduct proper planning
Extensively prepare your lesson plan, schemes and record of work. This will assist you to stick with your objectives
12. Conduct proper evaluation in testing
Set examinations in relation to the standards and format for KNEC. Expose your students to the reality of actual papers in examinations
