Reason why the 1957 elections are important in the History of Kenya

We must first find out what happened in those elections before we conclude why they were important in the history of Kenya.

The Lyttelton constitution

1954

​Oliver Lyttelton the British colonial secretary visited Kenya and made constitution reforms. He supported creation of multinational society where all races would share political power.
​
He proposed the place of existing governor executive councils or multi-ratio councils of ministers should be formed to represent the 3 races.

The unofficial members of the new council would now include: 1 African, 2 Asians and 3 Europeans.

The African and official members was B. A Mutanga the 1st African to be appointed minister became minister for community development and African affairs in 1954.

Major reforms that resulted from the Lyttelton Constitution of 1954 in Kenya

1. It led to the establishment of a Multi-racial council of Ministers made up of official and un official members.  This new council replaced the Executive Council.
2. B.A. Obanga one of the nominated African members was made Minister for Community Development and African affairs.
3. Africans were allowed to form political organisations whose functions were confirmed to district levels.
4. The government provided for elections of eight Africans to the legislative Council.
5. It led to the establishment of an Advisory Council to discuss government policies.

1955

Although two Africans were in the council by 1955 they opposed the little time constitution because it only strengthened the European position.

The Europeans were not happy either they objected very strongly to the involvement of the Africans and Asians in political management for the colony. The electioneer group of the Europeans was led by Captain Briggs.
​
In 1955, the government lifted the bank on political organisation in the line with the recommendation of colonial secretary Oliver Lyttelton.

​However African were allowed to form only local political organisations that were district based as opposed to national wide of political parties.

The political parties soon formed were:

• Tom Mboya formed the Nairobi People’s convention Party
• D. Mwanyumba formed the Taita African Democratic Union.
• John Kebaso formed the Abagusii Association,
• Argwings Kodhek formed the Kenya National Congress
• John Keen the Maasai Front.

Africans were able to take part in elections of 1957. It proposed multi-racial elections. However, other than race-pegged rules for participation in the 1956/57 elections, Voting qualification for Africans were based on income, property and education.

​March 1957 the 1st African election to the legislative were held those who won elections include:

1. Masinde Muliro – North Nyanza Constituency
2. Laurence Oguda – South Nyanza Constituency
3. Ronald Ngala – Coast Constituency
4. Daniel Arap Moi – Rift Valley Constituency
5. Bernard Mate – Central Constituency
6. James Muindi – Ukambani Constituency
7. Oginga Odinga – Cental Nyanza Constituency

​The African united members of the legislative formed an organization known as the African elected members organization (AEMO) with Oginga Odinga – chairman

Role of African elected members of parliament in the struggle for independence

1. Pressurize for independence
2. Made known the African grievances in National forums.
3. Sort for release of imprisoned and detained missionaries.
4. Demanded for greater political rights for Africans.
5. Made Kenyatta popular as a nationalist hero.
6. Participated in the formulation of independent constitutions.
7. Enlightened African masses on the liberation struggling
8. Formed nationalist political parties’ e.g KANU and KADU which spearheaded for country into independence.

Reason why the 1975 elections are important in the History of Kenya

​Eight African representatives were elected to parliament for the first time to represent the eight constituencies (provinces) thus more African representatives.
