How to get B+ in KCSE

It is in every child's dream to score good grades, go to university and pursue his/her career dream. But most often this is not the case.

According to KUCCPS data 122,831 students secured entry into university 2019/2020 (KUCCPS) this number is out of the 679, 222 who sat for 2019 KCSE examinations (tuko) representing 17.62%.

B+ is one of the grades that can secure you placement into high level learning institutions. In this page, we will discuss on ways you can exploit in order to achieve this.

Cheating

Cheating in Kenya is prohibited. It can land you in jail for a number of years or attract large fines.

​I am not therefore going to encourage you to practice cheating. There are a number of ways you can do this without necessarily being obsessed to cheating.

Doing it the right way

Doing it the right way is the best way you can secure a B+ grade without much of a fuss.

In this option, I am going to discuss three areas that you need to emphasize in your mission to secure a B+ Grade. They include:

2. Subjects that can help you rise up the ladder
3. How to prepare yourself

​Understanding grading systems and three scenarios 

As a student, you will be more advantaged to understand KCSE grading system because it may help you focus on what you want.

Please note that in almost every national examinations, grading of subjects is moderated. Moderation is like a variable which determines subject grade in relation to students' performances.

There are subjects whose 'A' starts from 90% others from 60% or even 45% but this depends entirely on student's performances.

​This brings a curve also called normalized curve which looks like 'a snake that has just swallowed sheep'. by this i mean, the head and the tail are small but the stomach is large. e.g

In a normalized curve average students should be more than bright and poor students.

Another aspect in grading system I want you to understand is how each grading letter is awarded points.

Three Scenarios

• Scenario 1
  You need to score a B+ in seven subject​s which is a must for English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Two sciences, One humanity and one technical or two humanities.
  This is 10 points x 7 subjects = 70 Points this secures a B+
• Scenario 2
  Score 'A' or 'A-' for your favorite subjects and C+ and above for other subjects. Example:
  If you score 'A' in 4 subjects brings points to 4 x 12 = 48. You need 32 more to score a B+
  ​Score a B in two subjects 9 x 2 = 18 | 32 - 18 = 14 remaining
  Score a C+ in the other 2 subjects which brings 7 x 2 = 14.-
  Total = 70
• Scenario 3
  Note that a B+ starts from 9.5 to 10.49999 points therefore you can struggle to reach 66.5 points (9.5 x 7).
  Just in case you fail a subject (I mean getting a C at minimum) you can compensate it by scoring A, A- or B+ in 5 subjects or 4 and still score a B+. Example:
  6 +(10 x 4) + 11 + 10 = 67 points. This also scores you a B+
  6 = C, 10 = B+, 11 = A-

​Subjects that can help you rise up the ladder

Please do what you can to make sure that you get at least a C+ and above for three compulsory subjects and a B+ and above for any of the sciences. They include:

1. Mathematics
2. English
3. Kiswahili
4. Chemistry/ Physics/Biology

The reason why I emphasis on sciences is because their grading is low. In most cases 45% - 67% can score A depending on the subject.

For the remaining other subjects, seek to score a B and above.

​How to prepare yourself

1. Start revision earlier. As early as in form 1
2. Seek advice from teachers and peers who have already excelled.
3. Attend symposiums to compare yourself with pupils from other schools
4. Be focused. Write down what you want and follow it to the latter.
5. Avoid company that you see cannot add value to your mission of achieving a B+
6. Have good relationship to your surrounding (people who surround you).
7. Attempt all topical questions in every textbook you use in class.
8. Acquire KCSE learning resources and past papers for your revision. This helps you understand how exams are set.
9. Keep yourself busy. Not necessarily studying, you can do other things such as community work, hobbies, creativity etc. The idea here is to keep yourself busy.
10. Avoid as much as you can. Sex, drugs, Alcohol, dance halls and watching programs on TV meant for adults. Live one day at a time, one step at a time. Work hard and dream big.
