Identify six factors that influenced the spread of Islam in North Eastern Kenya

The sheiks from Somali land and from the Coast of Kenya
The proximity of the Arabia to Somalis and the people of Southern Arabia
The intermarriage between the Somali and the people of Hala helped the spread of Islamic.
The nature and lifestyle of the Somali community moving from one place to another in search of water helped
The hospitality of the Somali community in welcoming visitors and being generous to them also helped the spread of Islam
The Somali culture, which closely related to that of Arabs helped easily acceptance of the Islam by the Somalis.
The establishment of Maula (temporary mosques) and late Madarasas and duksi further helped the spread of the Islam in Northern Kenya.

Roles of the city states in East Africa?

Centres of spreading Islam in these states.
Intermarriages took place with the foreigners and inhabitants.
Attraction centres especially the mosques and madrassa to convert to Islam.
Trade centres – traders dwelt in these states.
Centres of employment – people got employment in the areas.
Establishment of social amenities e.g roads due to people coming to these centres.

Effects of the First contact of Muslims with the East Cost of Africa

Trade was established between the East African Coast and the Arab world.
Muslim traders settled along the coast and their settlements developed into city states.
Brought Islam to the coast of East Africa/Islamisation of the inhabitants of the region.
Intermarriages between the local population and Muslim traders resulted in the Swahili people, culture and language.
Established centres of learning in the region.
Built mosques and madrassa. .
They introduced new ways of architecture which was adopted by the local people.
Opened East Africa to the rest of the world/made East Africa known by the rest of the world.
Brought in/introduced new crops/food to the region.
