To establish the degree acceptability of hadith. By classifying hadith it is ranked into various categories. The hadith becomes most acceptable compared to the other hadiths.
Classification helps guide people what type of hadith to accept or reject. This is importance because they would be no meaning for one to apply a forged arrage hadith yet they are authentic hadiths.
Classification helps hadith guides against infiltration of forged and false hadith into authentic as this would brink great confusion and havoc.
Classification of hadith provides a easy reference and saves time. As one does not waste tome searching for a specific hadith which is also a very cumbersome process.
Classification of hadith is very vital especially for those scholars fight. This is because they must be able to distinguish, compare e.t.c between different hadiths when doing research on various or particular topic.

Give the differences between Hadith Qudsi and Hadith (10 marks)

Hadith Qudsi is the sacred saying of Allah while Nabawi is the prophet words i.e Qudsi is the rerm used for Hadih related to a revelation form Allah expressed in the language of the prophet (saw)
Hadith Qudsi are narrated by the prophet beginning with an Allah words e.g. Allah says....” where as hadith Nabawi begins with prophet said....”
The meaning of Hadith Qudsi is revealed to the prophet whereas Hadith Nabawi is inspired.
In Qudsi, the main speaker is Allah even if the words are from the prophet while in Nabawi the sole speaker is prophet.
Qudsi is wholly authentic while Nabawi has some defect like weak and rejected hadith
Hadith Qudsi’s number is limited while Nabawi is not limited
Qudsi deals with certain major issues mainly of worship while Nabawi deals with longer areas.
Qudsi is compiled in one book while Nabawi has many compilations
Qudsi is the second importance to the Quran while Nabawi is the third
Nabawi was counter checked at the time of the compilation and cross-examination in matn and Isnad unlike hadith Qudsi

During this period, the Prophet [s.a.w] was a living preference. People went to him whenever there was difficulty.

The companions of the Prophet [s.a.w] had memorized the Ahadith.
The Prophet [s.a.w] had warned his companions against fabricating the Ahadithwith Hell fire.
He instructed his companions to transmit even if it was one word.
He sent delegations to teach Ahadith and used to tell them to remember that they should report what they have heard from him to those who were not around.
The companions with weak memories were allowed to take note of his teachings.
He emphasized on repeating the same thing three times.
He did some religious rites and asked them to perform them the same way he did.

The Prophet [s.a.w.] did not open a class or school where he could teach Hadith.

He established informal schools where Hadith was taught.
At times, the Prophet [s.a.w] would just instruct his companions to pass on the knowledge to others.
He created incentives for the teachers; e.g. he gave promises from Allah of rewards in the Hereafter.
He also created incentives/ motivation to the learners of promises from Allah of rewards in the Hereafter.
He used threats/warnings of punishment from Allah if they remained ignorant.
He taught Hadith through his own practical demonstrations; e.g. he demonstrated of how one can perform ablution, etc.
The Prophet [s.a.w] sent out teachers to distant lands to teach Hadith.
After Salah, the Prophet [s.a.w] would sit in the mosque and he would answer through the ‘question and answer’ method, questions from the As’habah. Most of the questions touched on different aspects of Islam.
He also asked his As’habah to write letters to various people and leaders explaining the fundamentals of Islam.
He encouraged people to write down the Ahadith during his last days so that they would not forget them.
The Prophet [s.a.w] encouraged people to memorize the Ahadith.
Through his own life experiences, the Prophet [s.a.w] practiced what he taught.
Through guidance and counseling, the Prophet [s.a.w] gave instructions to those who sought help from him.
He told the As’habah stories. He taught through life experience, life approach, i.e. by drawing his teaching examples from people’s experiences.
He taught through sermons (Khutbah)’ in this he could expound on different experiences/acts.

Contributions made by Imam Bukhari in the development of hadith.

He dedicated his life in compiling a book that would strictly comprise of authentic traditions.
His authentic book of hadith (sahih Bukhari) is the most depended book of hadith immediately after the Holy Qur’an.
Imam Bukhari studied the lives of narrators to make sure they were trustworthy and would not fabricate or change the wording of a hadith.
Imam Bukhari analysed each hadith as either sahih, hasan, Mutawatir , ahad, dhaif or maudhu a system that became the standard by which all hadith were classified by other hadith scholars.
He made the study of hadith a science with governing laws that protected the field from innovations and corruptions.
He organized his collection in a way that it can also be used to help deduce rulings within Islamic law.
He divided his book into different topics each with numerous chapters within it for easy references e.g. “the superiority of extra prayers at night in Ramadhan i.e Taraweh.
His book has helped Muslims live their lives as close to the life of the Prophet (S.A.W) as possible.
His monumental work inspired generations of scholars of hadith including Imam Muslim who produced authentic book of hadith called Sahih Muslim considered the second best only to Sahih Bukhari in authenticity.

Reasons for the collection and compilation of Hadith.

The emergence of the act of hadith forgery made it necessary to devise scientific method of collection and compilation of hadith.
Hadith collection was necessitated by the fact that people who were masters of hadith as well as the Qur’an were dying either by way of natural causes like old age, sickness or in wars.
The collection was also because of some people who had started interpreting Islamic teachings especially from the Holy Qur’an in their own ways.
Many people who accepted Islam wanted to acquire the knowledge of the Qur’an and also hadith thus its compilation.
After the death of the Prophet(s.a.w) the companions travelled far and wide for Islamic propagation, in this activity, Qur’an could not only be used but also hadith which necessitated its collection and compilation.
Hadith collection was also necessitated by the fact that Muslims conquered a large area of the world where they had established Islamic leadership. This consequently called for the wide study of hadith.
The Qur’an revelation attracted many people. After the Prophet’s death Qur’anic injunctions could only be interpreted by the use of the Prophet’s words thus the need for his words preservation.
