(c) Discuss the rationale for the prohibition of zina in Islam. (7 marks)

Rationale for prohibition of Zina in Islam
  1. Zina leads to moral degradation and lack of respect of those who engage in it.
  2. Zina can cause, life threatening diseases some of which have no cure e.g. HI V/AIDS.
  3. Zina leads to family break up due to divorce, if a spouse finds out that the partner engages in Zina, it may lead to divorce. .
  4. Children may suffer as a result of divorce, they lack parental support and love, this is caused by Zina.
  5. Zina neglects the noble objectives of sex to a mere gratification of physical desires.
  6. May cause poverty as resources are diverted from their proper use,to paying for and promoting the immorality.
  7. Zina leads to siring of illegitimate children, who may suffer due to lack of parental love from both parents.
  8. Zina attracts punishment from Allah in this world and the hereafter.

  1. Qisas (law of equity) applied for a murderer who kills someone intentionally.
  2. Punishment of death to the traitor/those who try to overthrow an elected Islamic goverrnnent/punishment for those who are guilty of treason.
  3. In war of defence (Jihad) against the enemies of Islam.
  4. A married man or woman who is given Hadd as punishment for adultery.
  5. Those who commit highway robbery.
  6. Apostacy.
