  1. A few weeks before prophet Muhammad’s death, he set out to perform the farewell pilgrimage (Hijjatul wida) at Mecca.
  2. On the return journey, He stopped at a place called Ghadir Khum and asked Bilal to sound Adhan.
  3. He then addressed the assembly and asked ; Am I not close to you than you are to yourselves?’’ ‘’Yes’’ the crowd replied.
  4. He then took Ali’s hand, raised it before the assembly and said “Every one whose patron Iam has Ali as a patron also. O Allah be a friend to whoever  is a friend to Ali and be the enemy to all his enemies. Help those who help him and leave those who desert him”
  5. By these words the prophet(S.A.W) designated Ali as his chosen successor
