There were so many religions which necessitated the revelation of the Quran to unite them.
  1. The Quran was revealed to suit all mankind who needed guidance voluntarily. There is no compulsion in religion.
  2. The earlier Scriptures were intended for particular people; e.g. Banu Israil, the Jews, etc. therefore there was need for a universal message.
  3. The earlier Scriptures which had lasted for centuries could not be preserved as they had lost their authenticity and therefore there was need for an authentic Scripture. 
  4. The earlier religions and Prophets continuously assured their followers of the coming of a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad s.a.w) with a Book (the Quran) which would lead to objectives of their religion. So the revelation of the Quran was in fulfillment of these objectives.
  5. There was need for man to be directed on how to worship Allah [S.W.T] in the right way.
  6. Mankind needed knowledge relating to the science of the universe which is all explained in the Quran.
  7. Mankind needed a book to guide him on social, spiritual, political and economic reforms.
  8. There was also need for knowledge of the hereafter.

Quran Hadith
Is the Word of Allah sent down upon Prophet
Muhammad (p.b.u.h) through Angle Jibril.
Is Report about the acts, sayings and confirmations of Prophet Muhammad.
The Quran has no categories because the meaning and wording are all form Allah. Categorised as Hadith Qudsi and Hadith Nabawi.
The Quran speaks in general terms and contains general principles Hadith being interpretation is analytical.
Explains the Quran .
Reading of the Quran is an act of Worship and the reader is rewarded. Reading of Hadith is not rewarded.
It is application is rewarded.
Quran is principally recited in daily prayers,without which the prayer is invalid. Hadith is not recited in prayers.
It is applied in prayers.
Cleanliness (twahara) is a primary requisite for reciting the Quran, Cleanliness (twahara) is not a requisite when reciting Hadith.
Quran is authentic as it was written and recited in its original form from the time of the prophet. Hadith are classified according to their degree of authenticity. Saleh, Hassan and Ahaij
Muslims are commanded to listen to the Quran when it is being recited. It is not a necessity to listen to hadith being recited.
The recording of the Quran took place during the prophets lifetime, he supervised it and listened to its order of memorization. The writing of Hadith was not supervised by the prophet
The Quran is memorised and recited in its original form/words, The words and sentences of Hadith may vary depending on the reporters.
The Quran must be quoted in its original form, no paraphrasing When quoting hadith, paraphrasing is allowed.

Circumstances that led to the standardization of the Quran.
  1. The Quran was revealed in seven Arabic dialects and therefore the necessity for its standardization. .
  2. Muslims taught, read and recited the Quran in its different readings and this created a need to read and recite the Quran from the same script.
  3. To stop some Arabs from the provinces from boasting that their dialects were superior to oth has to be in Quraysh dialect.
  4. To be able to correct mistakes made by new Muslims in their recitation of the Quran.
  5. The expansion of the Muslim territories beyond Arabia brought in non-Arabic speaking Muslims. A standardized Quran, was therefore necessary to make it easy for them to read,memorise and recite the Quran.
  6. Different copies of the Quran, some incomplete were circulating, as it became necessary to have a standardized Quran.
  7. The death of the Prophet meant the end of Revelation. No more Revelation was expected therefore there was a need for a standardized Quran. .

  1. Keep the Quran in a clean place.
  2. Concentrate fully and leave aside all other preoccupations/presence of mind.
  3. Be ritually clean and sit on a clean place with Udhu.
  4. Face the Qibla.
  5. Observe humility and respect for the Quran.
  6. Begin the reading with “Audhu-bi-llahi followed by Bismillah

Role played by angel Jibril in the revelation of the Qur’an.
  1. Jibril brought the Qur’an from Lauhil Mahfudh to the Prophet (p.b.u.h.).
  2. He came to the Prophet in a vision and spoke to him in a clear voice to deliver the Qur’an.
  3. He recited the Qur’an to the Prophet (p.b.u.h) many times and the first occasion was at the cave of Hira.
  4. He bought the Qur’an in bits as commanded by Allah in order to make it easily understood and applied accordingly, this continued for 23 years.
  5. In the last days of the Prophet’s life, Jibril came during Ramadhan to read the Qur’an with the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) as ordered by Allah.
  6. He was a teacher of the Prophet, he taught his how to read and pronounce the words of the Qur’an.

Ways through which Muslims preserve the Qur’an today.
  1. Through memorization: the Qur’an has been committed to memory by many Muslims, hence its preservation.
  2. Qur’an recitation competitions where Muslims both young and old take part and prizes offered to the best reciters.
  3. Qur’an has been preserved in print and electronic media e.g. cassettes, CDs,flash disks, magazines, newspapers. The written text of the Quran can be stored on CDs and flash disks, and also the recitation of the whole Qur’an can be recorded in cassettes.
  4. Qur’an is recited daily in prayers by all Muslims.
  5. The printed copy of the Qur’an has been reprinted and copies circulated all over the world.
  6. The whole text of the Qur’an is recited by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadhan.
  7. Programmes on Qur’an recitation are broadcast on television and radio e.g.radio Iqra, radio Rahma.
  8. High respect is accorded to memorizers and this encourages Muslims to commit the Qur’an to memory.
  9. Original manuscript of the holy Qur’an which dates back to the period of Sahaba is preserved in museums around the world.
  10. Qur’an has been written in separate volumes e.g. Surah Yasin. Sura Al-fatiha,for easy recitation and preservation.
  11. The Qur’an has been translated into other languages e.g. Kiswahili, therefore,many Muslims are able to read it and understand hence, preserve it.
  12. Qur’an has been printed on calendars and gift artefacts found all over the world hence its preservation.
  13. Qur’an is taught at all levels of learning e.g. Madrasa (duksi), schools, colleges,universities.
  14. Qur’an recitation is done at the beginning of every Islamic function or meeting hence encouraging its preservation.

Ways through which a Muslim nation can co-exist peacefully with people of different nations.
  1. Through appreciating the unity of the creator i.e. one God who created all living beings. This will enable Muslims to co-exist peacefully with people of other nations.
  2. Through appreciating unity of mankind, who originated from the same father and mother, Muslims develop a sense of belonging hence, unity and brotherhood is enhanced.
  3. Through respect of other nations interests and right to life and property i.e. should not destroy their properties, should deal justly and kindly with them (Q 60:8)
  4. Toncentrating on common/mutual interests e.g. education, security, economic/social/political development and avoiding divisive/controversial issues such as tribalism, racism e.t.c.
  5. Forming joint committees and councils to resolve conflicts whenever they arise between the nations.
  6. By attending and participating in conferences and seminars to discuss matters on peaceful co-existence whenever invited.
  7. Organising/forming joint political/social forums to share ideas and other concerns.
  8. Appreciating other nations laws, traditions and customs through exercising tolerance.
  9. Educating the youth and other members of the society about the Islamic teachings in relating with other nations.

  1. Allah promises to protect it.
  2. It was delivered to an unlettered prophet.
  3. It gives scientific details discovered by the enquiries and research made by man in later centuries.
  4. It gives an indepth analysis of the future and the hereafter.
  5. It has no shortcomings in substance or content thus does not contradict itself.
  6. No one can produce anything like it even one chapter, despite the presence of reknown poets in Arabia.
  7. Some letters in the Quran cannot be explained e.g Alif-lam-mim.
  8. It is easy to memorise
  9. It soothes the mind, acts as a mental therapy and Shifaa(cure).

Differences between the compilation and the standardisation of the Holy Quran.
  1. Compilation of the Quran was done during the reign of Khalifa Abubakar (R.A) and standardization was done during the reign of Khalif Utuman (R.A).
  2. In the compilation of the Quran there was only one scribe Zaid bin Thabit but in the standardization there were four scribes, Zaid bin Thabit, Abdullahi Ibn Zubair, Said Ibn Aas and Abdulrahman Ibn Harith.
  3. Compilation of the Quran was done at the advice of Umar-al-Khahab while standardization was done at the adive fo Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman.
  4. Reason for compilation of the Quran was for fear of the loss of the Quran and reason for standardization was for fear of disunity of the Ummah.
  5. Compilation of the Quran involved collection of the different portions of written Quran into one single volume while standardization involved the unification of the pronunciation of the Quran.
  6. Compilation of the Quran resulted into one official copy while standardization resulted into six official copies distributed to the six provinces.

Characteristics of the language of the Quran.
  1. The language of the Quran is rhythmatic and harmonious e.g Surah Nas, Lahab, Iklas.
  2. The language of the Quran combines both poetic and prose from e.g Surah Nas, Lahab, Baqarah.
  3. The verses of the Quran are in classical arabic and in the dialect of the Quraish of Makka.
  4. The language is precise and to the point, does not contain extra words that do not add value.
  5. The verses that express the fear of Allah are fiery and those that express the mercy of Allah are in soft language.
  6. The Quran contains vocabularies that are difficult to understand and interpret which Allah uses as a challenge to Muslims e.g Alif-lam-mim.
  7. The language of the Quran is easy to comprehend.
  8. There is repetition of words and sentences in various surah for affirmation e.g
