​(b) Explain five factors that limit the exploitation of tropical rain forest in Africa.

1. The vegetation has a thick undergrowth/ dense forest  which makes penetration/ development of roads difficult.
2. Tree take long to mature which discourages exploitation.
3. Trees occur in mixed form making it difficult to exploit valuable species.
4. The Climbers / thick vegetation obstruct the felling of trees / huge buttress roots obstruct felling operation / slow felling of trees.
5. Water logged / swampy ground makes construction and maintenance of roads expensive/impassable.
6. Hot and humid conditions are uncomfortable / encourage breeding of disease carrying pests which affect human beings.
7. Some wild animals found in the forest are dangerous and may attack people.
8. Logs are heavy / bulk hence difficult to transport.
9. Limited use of hardwood discourage exploitation

​(c) Explain three measures being taken to conserve  forests in Kenya

1. Tree  planting/ re- afforestation/ -NGO’s planting of indigenous species is being encouraged to preserve the endangered species.
2. People are required to seek permits if they have  to cut tree. This reduces the rate of tree felling/ unlicensed people do not cut down tree.
3. Forest reserves have been  set aside to conserve indigenous species.
4. Forestry department of the Ministry of Natural Resources carry out research to produce  and distribute seedlings/ to en sure the extension of forests.
5. People are being educated through mass  media education  on the importance of forest conservation
6. People are being encouraged to use alternative sources of energy saving jikos
